In Donoghue v Stevenson<\/em>, Mrs Donoghue went to a caf\u00e9 with her friend. The friend bought Donoghue a bottle of ginger beer. She drank it half-way, only to find a snail\u2019s decomposed remains in the opaque bottle. Disgusted, outraged, and sickened, Donoghue successfully sued the ginger-beer brewer.<\/p>\n

Since Donoghue v Stevenson<\/em>, the legal rules protecting consumers have evolved through case law and legislation. Consumers who buy products and services have a right to sue when companies and businesses fail to observe consumer rights.<\/p>\n

The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) is statutorily empowered to safeguard consumers from substandard and harmful products and services. The CPC, especially in recent years, has been doing a marvelous job of enlightening consumers, but effective enforcement remains a tough challenge for both CPC and consumers. The Green Snail in the Opaque Bottle<\/em><\/strong> will address these and related consumer-law concerns. The faculty includes judges, practitioners, and the academia.<\/p>\n
